Chikmagalur, formerly known as Chikkamagaluruis situated in the southern state of Karnataka in India.

Historically it is recorded that the Chikmaglur city was presented as a dowry to the younger daughter of the unquestioned and legendary figure Rukmangada, the chief of Sakrepatna. The other part of the town, which was given as dowry to elder daughter of Rukmangada is the Hiremaglur. Some of the inscriptions available in Chikmagalur and Hiremaglur point out to the old names of Kiriya-Magalu and Priya Magalu.

The first coffee plant was grown at Chikmagalur. It was brought from West Asia by Baba Budan also known as Dada ka pahad nothing but mountain giri, whose shrine is on top of the hills in the region.

Although the town of Chikmagalur is a very quaint one that can be best described as an abode for relaxation, the surrounding region has a varied landscape - from the low flatlands to the hilly regions of Malnad. The district has a huge number of coffee estates, and is rightly considered to be the coffee capital of Karnataka.

Shopaholics can take a walk down to MG Road for a good time, and the adventurous can explore the surrounding destinations.
The chikmagalur district is full of scenic surprises hills, valleys, streams and snow-white coffee blossoms. Chikmagalur is a trekker's delight, with its rugged mountain trails.Chikmagalur district is divided into seven taluks namely Chikmagalur, Kadur, Tarikere, Mudigere, Koppa, N.R.Pura and Sringeri.
